Values.

By: Ahmed M. ELNAHAS – Montopoli, September 12th 2012.
“…go forth to command wisely, to advise prudently, to protect with vigilance, and to judge with care. And above all, to defend with all your heart, all your soul and all your courage the lives of the men and women under your command.”
Such are the presidencies that most western Military Generals usually give to the fresh officers as the closing passage while delivering the graduation speech!
Considering what is still being consumed systematically every single day, all over the country whether in a Police station, a traffic light, a tribunal, a public service administration or at a military check point (especially in rural Upper Egypt remote areas), I cannot help my demonic thoughts from wondering:
Ø  What principles and values could our Military and  Police Academies Generals and tutors (ever since the late Field Marshal Abdel Hakeem Amer and the late General Sha’rawy Gom’a onwards till our present days) be teaching theirs?!!
Ø  What could be the reason by which those who swore to “Serve and Protect” the “People” have instead mastered the art of humiliating and torturing their fellow citizens? A devilish art that expanded like a wild fire in all directions to infect every corner , every angle, every street, and every city of our entire nation.
It is a certainty that all doctrines, monotheistic or other, have never preached any of that.. Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hindu, and Sikh; they all promoted fraternity, tolerance, love and peace.. They all promised grace and benediction to the rich who helps the poor and to the strong who defends and stands by the weak.. They all elaborated on the values by which human society can evolve and progress.. They all defined the “Capital Sins” by which evil will prevail, and render impossible the very basic survival elements: co-existing and sharing.
But then again, are such ideals only ideals?? That we can come in contact with only in books or tales?? Are they never to be recognized anymore in that real hard cruel cold everyday life??
My Sufi ego says that together, using our differences and restoring our “ABANDONED VALUES”, we may have a chance to regain our humanity and live side by side in dignity.. But my Anarchic ego says otherwise.. It says that we will continue to disrespect each other, to destroy each other and demolish our God granted generous planet, in what seems to be the most stupid and irrational mass suicide.
The problem is that we’re not just killing ourselves.. We’re killing the planet itself.. The one that God loaned to us as a colossal test assignment, by which outcome we will be judged.
What an absurd, yet amazingly true, intellectual paradox it is that “Cruelty” is only a “Human” characteristic! And please don’t tell me about the cat/mouse game.. It’s completely another story.. A story in which, once again, “Man” is the protagonist personifying the main character!
Pass On The Word.
