From the article: “Our good
isn’t Common” – ilfattoquotidiano.it/blog/mvalcarenghi/
Ahmed M. ElNahas – Montopoli, January 12th
2015.
We are getting used to our daily
laments and complaints, whether at home or on the street, on a bus or at the
club, in office or in the super market, watching TV or on the beach, in a
church or in the mosque, at school or in the factory; about the continuous
increase of prices against the lack of services: education, employment,
transportation, health care, energy, gas, fuel, food, water supply, pollution,
corruption, legality, criminality, terrorism, fear, administration and
bureaucracy….Etc.
Forgetting that the general degrade
of our society is mainly due to our failure in adequately defining and seriously
considering the essential concept of the term “Common Good”! That
villainous egoism, by which each one of us remain concentrated on his proper
personal interests, has many reasons among which: the successions of foreign
dominations, the separations into a multitude of states, the delay in
structuring a “National” state and the long absence of a “Democratic Tradition”;
but mainly the indisputable dominion of traditions, legends, myths and religion
over almost every aspect of the “Common Conscience” thus crushing any
initiative to illuminate the “Common Sense”!
We are restrained by the difficulty in
asking ourselves:
·
What could be
good for my country?
·
What could make
me improve things for the common interest of the major part of the people?
·
What would
render us more free and establish our legally constituted state?
·
What could give
back labour, dignity and honour to our togetherness?
·
What is the true
sense of this social pact of ours?
·
Will it still
be the Constitution?
We shouldn’t lay all on the state,
the administration, the parliament or the delegates and representatives simply
because we chose them and sometimes for them, for a reason or another, knowing
that they are unadapt to carry out the responsibility of such a complex “Res
Publica”* as ours.. Because they will do, and continue doing, their own
interests and shady deals.. So, until the true value and meaning of “Common
Good” would prevail; only we are to be blamed!
Pass on the Word.
* Latin for “Public
Matter” becoming the origin for “Republic”.
